Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Have a blessed holiday. Proudly employing military veterans. Boker Tree Brand Knives View all Boker Tree Brand Knives Forged in a tradition of excellence that began nearly two centuries ago in the “Blade City” of Solingen, Germany, Boker knives are among the most prestigious lines of blades and cutlery in the world. Through some of history’s most tumultuous events, the Boker name has survived, with its superior cutting products all distinguished by the Boker tree — a symbol of the towering, ancient chestnut that once grew outside the original Boker factory hundreds of years ago. The reputation of the power and quality infused into the knives etched with the Boker tree expanded throughout Europe in the 19th century before crossing an ocean, and then eventually a continent, to find a devoted legion of customers throughout the USA and beyond. As the Boker legacy grew, new factories with new designs and products began springing up on both sides of the Atlantic to meet the increased demands of an exploding market. Soon, Boker was a top American manufacturer of everything from German kitchen knives to folding pocket knives , to hunting knives and fixed blade knives , to knife sharpeners and sheaths, to multitools , scissors, and much more.
Why is the Star of David on the sword of the Marines? Anyone with a historical note on this. This is what I found: The above reference comes from JewishMarines. If the sword is made by the Wilkinson Sword Company the Star of David is on the hilt because the company was founded by a Jew, and the swords made by the direct descendants all have the Star of David on the hilt. Are either of the above known to be true or are they urban legends??

Dating Zippo Lighters. by Frank Dutton. BACK to Index of Articles: Reference for Dating Zippo Lighters How old is your Zippo lighter? While the information for dating a Zippo is widely available, it isn’t that handy to find it all in a single location.
However, after a request from the the archivist of the Incorporation of Goldsmiths, who looks after the historical records of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Assay Offices, the editor of the NAWCC Bulletin has allowed the article to be made publicly available and it can now be downloaded by clicking on this this link: My research has also been incorporated in the latest version of Bradbury’s Book of Hallmarks, you can read about this at Bradbury’s Book of Hallmarks.
I will be publishing some corrections and additions to my NAWCC article that I will make available as a download here. The following sections illustrate some characteristic marks to help you identify the type of marks you might find in a watch case and then link to a page that goes into more details about those marks. Sterling silver import marks British Import Hallmarks After 1 June all gold and silver watches imported into Britain were required to be assayed and hallmarked in a British assay office.
They were stamped with new hallmarks that were intended to show that the item was imported and not of British manufacture. The picture here shows a set of London import hallmarks for silver. For clarity this picture does not include the sponsor’s mark, but a set of British hallmarks is not complete and legal without a sponsor’s mark. The first figure is a nine on its side, not a six. The other legal standards for gold were represented similarly: In the same way that the sign of Leo was introduced as a new town mark for the London Assay Office to use on imported items, other British assay offices used different town marks for imported items.
Decimal fineness marks were used on imported gold as well as silver in place of the traditional British symbols. The date letters used on imported items were the same as those used on native items, and each assay office continued with its own unique sequence of date letters. I started this website about 11 years ago and it soon turned into a job. But, as of March 1st , it’s back to being a hobby! That means I will not have a chance to check or to answer my emails as I have in the past. Due to the new time constraints I will be forced to answer ONLY the questions that pertain directly to knife purchases or sales. If you have a knife or knives you would like to sell or if you are looking to buy a knife from me, please feel free to contact me, but Please Be Patient, it may be awhile before I get back to you.
Also, I am in the process of trying to write a book about Puma Knives, but it is a very slow and time consuming project, and the only way I can see to gain more time for the book is to stop answering all of the email questions about knives! Again I regret having to do this but it’s the only way I can see to gain the time to finish the book. From the way it’s going it may be 3 or 4 years before the book is finished, but I am sure that most of your questions will probably be answered in the book once it’s done.
I will let you know when it is finished. With that said, I hope you enjoy the website.

Western started making the W49 in In Western started the practice of adding a date code to most of the knives they produced. That practice continued after the Platt family sold the company to Coleman in thru to when Camillus bought the rights to Western at auction. I’ve identified at least 6 variations and I think there may be a 7th between the years and The first two variations in the W49 were marked on the blade and they didn’t include the stock code W49 but did have the name Bowie on them.
In Western’s catalog they say that all of their fixed blade knives are marked on the guard with the stock number of the knife.
Western Knife Company History Founder Western Cutlery traced its beginnings to the Platts & Sons Cutlery Company, established in in Gowanda, New York, by Charles W. Platts, an immigrant knife maker from Sheffield, England.
These knives were made both marked and unmarked. They were also made with a single edge and a double edge blade.. The double edge blade is still covered in old grease. The scabbard has pistol belt hooks added and is marked “E. Pless USN” on the back.. The scabbard is original to the knife, very well made with a buckle type grip strap.. This is the large version of the knife with the see through handle.
The scabbard is original to the knife.. The knife itself is identical to the Raider knife and if it had not been with this scabbard, you would not know the difference. This knife has a wood handle and a blue blade.

Hard statistics are scarce, of course, but the Buck has probably field-dressed more game than any other single knife of the last half-century. Overview Buck has sold millions of s, and millions of words have been written about them. Blade The Folding Hunter wears a 3. The blade uses plain HC stainless steel, which in most applications is a so-so performer at best. After a heat treatment from industry legend Paul Bos , however, that ho-hum HC punches well above its weight and performs almost like a higher-priced supersteel with a hardness of HRC There are a lot of old s out there that have been hand-ground down to 3.
Many newer clip-point designs, like this Cold Steel Mackinac Hunter, have strongly reinforced tips. If your needs require one-handed opening, there are aftermarket thumb studs that clamp onto the spine of the blade. It requires a lot of leverage to open the blade against this spring pressure, and this is why the nail nick is so far forward on the blade.
Aftermarket thumb studs also have to be mounted fairly far forward, and they start to interfere with cutting. Ergonomics The Buck is not a small knife, and it really fills average-sized hands like mine.

I conisder them more collector’s knives than users, atleast the ones with the stainless blades. This is just my opinion, but their Stainless doesn’t hold a working edge for long if you use them this depends on what you use them on. They usually come scary sharp and are easy to resharpen, but after cutting down a few boxes in the office the blade was pretty dull, it would no longer shave hair off my arm and would rip paper rather than soar right through it.
It wouldn’t even cut my finger when examining it. Rust shouldn’t be a problem after you get a nice patina on the blade s tho if they are CV. Some people say that the CV steel is harder to sharpen than the stainless, but if you can get a great edge on the stainless, you can do the same with the CV, it just might take you an extra minute or two.
Eastern , but their steels Queen uses D2 steel, G. Eastern uses are greatly superior to case’s IMO. But, dispite my opinions, they are beautiful knives. Craftsman ship is excellent on most all of their knives except for a few lemons here and there. If ur looking for a people friendly knife and arn’t going to be using it hard, then i would recommend a case in either of their steels, but if you are looking for a knife you intend to use hard, then i would advise to spend a little bit more money and get a queen or G.

The brothers learned their craft at Cattaraugus Cutlery and soon thereafter left and formed the iconic brand that bears their name. Case knives are legendary from the farm fields of the Mid-west to the hills of Tennessee to the oil fields of West Texas. Tough and hard-working, this line mirrors the qualities of its users. Outside hinge with 3 barrels: Many of the early hinges were replaced, as have been some later ones, so the hinge barrel count is not always absolutely accurate as it is possible a repair replacement has been made. The appearance wasn’t so great and there was a tendency to rust, so a black crackle paint was used on these lighters. Black crackle Zippos were apparently produced only for shipment to armed forces overseas and none were produced for domestic sales. The difference between a and Zippo can be determined by the insert as the ones had markings on them.
The information presented here came from researching a number of Internet sites with bits and pieces from each. Zippo records indicate an overlap of bottom stamp configurations from Some lighters produced between were date coded; however, specifics remain unclear. In an error was made in the date code. One of the slash marks was removed from the left of the Zippo trademark instead of being removed from the right; thus the code read: This date code error was corrected within the same year to read: Beginning in , the Roman numerals indicating the year were replaced with numbers corresponding to the last digits of the year of manufacture.
The date code is the same format as Regular Windproof Lighters. Chart and footnotes are from the Zippo Facebook page as is the Bottom Stamp image.
